AmeriCorps members are not employees of the Program or of the federal government. The definition of “participant” in the National and Community Service Act of 1990 as amended applies to AmeriCorps members. As such, “a participant (member) shall not be considered to be an employee of the Program in which the participant (member) is enrolled” ((42 U.S.C. 12511(30) (B)). Moreover, members are not allowed to perform an employee’s duties or otherwise displace employees, and therefore generally not eligible to receive unemployment compensation.

About Strive: How You Lead Matters

Strive: How You Lead Matters is a non-profit organization dedicated to spreading the power of character-driven leadership. We deliver dynamic experiences in sport, school and community spaces. Strive’s mission is to spread the power of character-driven leadership. Service Position Details: 

• Service Term: August 2026 – July 2027
• Hours: Weekly, up to 25 hours per week, minimum of 15 hours
• Consistent weekly availability between hours of 8:30 am – 2:30 pm, M-F
• Total Hours: 900
• Location: New Castle County DE
• Travel: Ability to travel to Strive partner school/CBO sites throughout New Castle County; occasional travel outside of New Castle County.
• Training: August 12 -14 (9 am – 4 pm) & August 27 (9 am – 4 pm)
• Stipend: $12,150.00 paid in equal amounts throughout your service term  
• Segal Service Award (awarded upon successful completion of service term requirements as detailed in the coach contract):  $3,697.50

What You’ll Do
As a Coach Across America AmeriCorps Member serving with Strive, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of youth by supporting and/or leading physical education (PE) classes, partnering with school staff to supervise students during lunch and recess, providing academic support through tutoring and homework assistance, and facilitating Strive programming. Additional details about the Strive program and your specific responsibilities will be provided during onboarding. You will build strong, supportive relationships with young people as they develop confidence, leadership skills, athletic ability, and healthy habits.

Strive Coaches lead with integrity and create joyful, inclusive spaces where students can thrive. Through comprehensive training in sports-based youth development, you will be equipped to support both the mental and physical growth of the youth you serve.

Role & Responsibilities

No prior coaching experience is required—just a genuine passion for supporting young people. Strive provides extensive training, and you’ll be guided by school and program staff throughout your service term.

Skills & Qualifications

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships
• Interest in education, mentoring, coaching, Social-Emotional Learning, youth development, leadership, or athletics

Preferred:

• Comfort using Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, etc.)
• Previous experience teaching, coaching, or facilitating

Expectations

• Personal laptop use is preferred; a laptop can be provided if needed.
• Reliable transportation is expected for all in-person commitments.
  All coaches complete background checks.

Eligibility

• U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
• Minimum age of 18
• High school diploma, GED, or in progress
• Reliable transportation
• Ability to fulfill all AmeriCorps service requirements
• Successful completion of background screenings

Sample Tasks

• Lead and/or assist PE classes with daily lessons utilizing provided FitKids Curriculum when appropriate
• Lead structured recess sessions
• Coach or assist with school or community sports teams
• Provide one-on-one and small-group student support
• Demonstrate athletic skills and encourage active participation
• Implement behavior-support strategies
• Reinforce social-emotional skill-building throughout the day
• Help gather program surveys and roster information
• Create a welcoming, safe, and active play environment

Coach Across America AmeriCorps Coaches must complete the following requirements to ensure successful completion of the AmeriCorps program:

• Completion of the minimum required hours (900 hours in this position) of service and training by the last day of the coach contract.
• Attendance at the Coach Across America Coach orientation.
• Completion of bi-weekly timesheets.
• Attendance at organization-wide days of community service.
• Attend/participate in Coach Across America trainings, meetings, and special initiatives.
• Attend Coach Training Institute (date to be announced by Field Manager).

Uniform Policy:

Coaches must wear Coach Across America branded t-shirts provided by Coach Across America with AmeriCorps logo when coaching and at program sessions and events. Coaches will be provided their uniform at no cost.
